Are You Drinking Your Red Wines Too Warm?

Are you drinking your red wines too warm? 😲

If you are drinking them at room temperature and if you have the heat blasting (or it’s mid-summer) and room temperature is above 65-68 degrees, then you are probably are!

Here’s why this is no good…

👉🏻 If the wine is too warm, the tannins will be too abrasive. If there are a lot, it’ll feel like major sandpaper mouth and it’s not pleasant.

👉🏻 If the wine is too warm, that alcohol-y smell will be way more obvious. It will just smell, literally, like alcohol.

Let the wine cool down a tad and the tannins will mellow, the alcohol will move to the background, and everything else you want to taste will come shining through.

So what should you do?

🍷 Stick your red wine in the fridge for about 10-20 minutes before you are ready to drink it. Heaver, more tannic reds (like Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec) should be on the less cool side and lighter, less tannic reds (like Gamay or Pinot Noir) on the cooler side.

🍷 If the tannins and alcohol feel abrasive, it’s too warm and stick it back in. If the wines feel closed and you can’t really smell it or taste it, it’s probably too cold, let it warm back up*.

*Tip: If it’s too cool, cup the glass in your hands to let your body temperature help warm the wine.
